If they work hard, he suggests that they can buy their freedom. However, Einar finds the reality is that they work hard, get little food to eat and are exploited by Ketil's retainers. Thorfinn communicates little, and his sprit appears completely broken. They also help the other workers with the wheat harvest, including Ketil, however Ketil's spoilt 17 tear old son Olmar hates farm work and has visions of being a warrior, of joining Canute's army and sailing to England. Einar rails against senseless war and violence which begins to stir some emotions in Thorfinn.
