Chise enters Cartaphilius's memory, and concludes the latter has fused with Joseph and switch their names when he was a gravedigger. Chise learns Cartaphilius was the man who threw a stone at Jesus during his crucifixion and was punished with immortality, a memory he has now forgotten. Cartaphilius attacks Chise, but she is saved by Elias and their allies. Chise pursues Cartaphilius at the fountain.
